Occupational Therapy

Two part time Occupational Therapists are employed to meet the needs of children accepted at the school with Occupational Therapy as part of their Statement of Special Educational Needs. It is also offered on a priority basis to children without previous assessment.

Occupational Therapy assists in addressing the needs of children who have difficulty accessing the school curriculum as a result of problems with:

  • Gross and/or fine motor skills
  • Perceptual skills
  • Sensory processing dysfunction

Wherever practicable, Occupational Therapy is delivered within the child’s class to ensure they participate in curriculum activities to their maximum potential. For example, gross motor skills can be addressed within a whole-class Physical Education session and fine motor skills, such as handwriting, within a class lesson or activity. Small-group work and individual sessions are provided as necessary.

The Occupational Therapist works closely with Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers and Learning Support Assistants to ensure all staff are aware of the particular support a child requires, ensuring that children practise and generalise their skills into all school activities.
